Salmon Shark

We know that the shark is a perfect killing machine. Its body has changed little in thousands of years because its design is virtually unbeatable. But we could say that the ability to kill could be improved if it were a warm-blooded fish, thus increasing muscle capacity, and decreasing your reaction time.

To nature, evolution, or whatever you want to call it, has already created a shark so called  salmon shark or Lamna ditropis. This still being a fish, is warm-blooded, maintaining a temperature of between 21 º.

I personally reminds me of a big tuna. It has a compact, strong body, pointed snout and flat, with large eyes and a large mouth full of sharp teeth. It is dark gray on the back and whitish belly. On the side is pinkish characteristic traits that make it and have earned it the name of Salmon Shark.

They can measure over 3 meters (9 ft.), and some witnesses say they have seen specimens of up to 4.5 meters (15 ft.) and 550 kg (1220 lb).

Dispatched by both Eastern North Pacific and Western. And a funny thing happens here that experts have not yet been able to explain. In the eastern regions are the females who maintain control over groups of sharks, however, in the western regions, the male domination is almost copies.

Risso's dolphin

Unlike the movies we watch, where there are very good characters good and bad characters are terrible, in nature, no animal is good and much less bad. Maybe us by our culture, we tend to classify among good and evil. For example, it is difficult to see how an animal "bad", a cow. But is easy to see how "bad" a tiger (as in the cartoon film Kung Fu Panda).

If you're going to sea, we usually see as "good" to dolphins and "bad" to the orcas. So possibly we head will explode when we know the Risso's dolphin(Grampus griseus). A good bad but very good ...dolphins ... bufff

These dolphins live in groups of up to 100 individuals. They are of dolphins there largest measuring up to 4 meters (14 ft)  and weigh 600 kg (1430 lb). Its way of relating is very similar to the orcas, in fact even as they hunt. Orcas are also known as killer whales, because they often hunt other whales. Well, the Risso's dolphin  also hunt whales, hunt whales not only inoffensive, but also other whales which are considered the world's greatest predators: the sperm whale. The sperm whale has the size and strength, Risso's dolphin  has the number and intelligence.

Another thing that strikes the Calderon is using the ecolocatitation. This will help to "see" what is in the sea and to communicate with other congeners Sometimes this ecolización (not sure why) fails and leaves dozens of people stranded on beaches. Many die.

Currently, this "naughty or nice" but intelligent dolphin is endangered. Risso's dolphin is caught indiscriminately sometimes unintentionally. What is not is the cruel slaughter involuntary that make this animal each year off the coast of Denmark.

Mantis shrimp or stomatopods

Any boxer would like to have the "direct hit" of this small crustacean. A marine animal, if it were larger, it would be the best superhero who ever lived.

They are called mantis, for its resemblance, but his front legs end with some strong clubs that are able to club with much power to its opponents, dams or larger predators. You can give as strong blows that break shells, and inflict mortal wounds larger fish or octopus insightful.

But do not think that is a simple stroke. It is a blow so powerful that generates as much energy to produce its own light. The speed produces a strong friction with water, generates electricity and heat that boils water and produces light and sound similar to waves of energy that we have seen of young (and not so young) in manga cartoons "Dragon Ball. "

Okay, I have exaggerated. Not so fantastic, but if it is true that produces light by strong friction with the water. It is true that boils the water with a hit and also if the coup fails, is able to bring down his victim with his blast.
The mantis shrimp is known to the submariners for their aggressiveness. If you ever catch them, divers are careful to take them to prevent them breaking a finger with a quick hit.

Experts have calculated that the speed reaches the mantis shrimp´s stick is 23 m / s, the same as a bullet.

The other superpower of our superhero, is vision. The shrimp can move independently of each eye (eg Chameleons) and are able to capture the infrared and ultraviolet. They are also capable of detecting four types of linear polarization and circular polarization two. And also, each eye has a stereoscopic view independently. They are the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom. Biologists do not yet know very well the precise role of this system, but felt it had sexual overtones and player. It is speculated to be a secret communication channel.

The Greenland shark, Somniosus microcephalus.

We know that the white shark can reach up to 6 meters long (18 ft) and, of course, is a large predator. But in terms of dangerous sharks, and murderers of large dams, we must speak of one that surpasses the great white shark, The Greenland shark.

This shark receives other name as the sleeper shark, gurry shark, ground shark, grey shark, or by the Inuit languages name Eqalussuaq.

This large shark of 7 meters (21 ft) long, lives at great depths to 2,500 meters (9.000 ft) , where no sunlight reaches. In the dark, the view is useless and the smell takes over. So when his refined sense of smell perceives the slightest speck of blood of any of its wounded prey, manages to capture it even found over 1 mile away.

It is true that by living most of his time in cold, dark waters, the shark has to reserve its precious energy, so their movements are slow ... as lazy. But make no mistake. The Greenland Shark up to the surface and when it finds its prey, it is less aggressive than any other shark, either the white shark, the bull shark or tiger shark. In many specimens have been caught, have been found walruses, seals and even polar bear parts. I imagine it, a polar bear, thanks to global warming has to swim across large distances between icebergs and boreal shark lurking down, biting, tiring, exhausting to death by drowning of a polar bear, already difficult to survival.

Thought to be one of the few animals that, together with the sperm whale and Pacific sleeper shark, comes to feed on giant and colossal squid.

Finally, much more can be said of this shark, but concluded by good news, we can rejoice in knowing that, for now, this enigmatic shark is not endangered.

Curiosity: The first image shows the eye "something". Now it is a very common parasite of this species.

The lamprey, the vampire ocean.

If we made a list of the strangest animals in the world, the Lamprey would be among the first places. It is known as the vampire from the depths.

It's a prehistoric animal that has not changed for 500 million years. When evolution had not invented the mandible as we know it today. It is a euryhaline organism. This means that animals are able to live in a wide range of salt concentrations without altering its metabolism. And so are found in rivers, lakes and seas. In fact, the Lamprey was born in a river, and return to spawn as salmon do.

But nothing Lamprey resemblance to a salmon. The lamprey is parasitic, not predatory, also thanks to its suction mouth is able to cling to the stone to help up the torrents of the rivers. In fact, they are so different that taxonomically speaking not considered fish, being so peculiar, have their own group, the paraphyletic group of cyclostomes.

But go to the outlandish. The mouth of the Lamprey, mouth-suction cup that reminds an alien movie, devoid of jaw. This has the shape of a funnel trimmed teeth and tongue corneal scraping. Attaches to the skin of its host and once hooked up to suck and suck, there has been the case, to kill her.

When the lamprey is a larva, feeds on a different form, has no teeth that we see in adults, nor have eyes. They feed by hairs (called barbules) that filter food. When adults go to sea, living as deep as 500 meters. They reach weights of 1 kg and 1 meter in length (40 inch), then return to spawn in the river, which left between 50,000 and 200,000 eggs ... Those are a lot of eggs ... Then lampreys die as do salmon.

It is very common in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea, where this animal is conceived as a tasty snack and a part as an essential ingredient in recipes in culinary traditions as old as the Roman.

The sperm whale.

The king of seas, oceans a top predator can defeat a group of Orcas (killer whales), descending to great depths and hunt giant squid. The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is undoubtedly the animal with greater ability to kill (this sounds a little nerdy) in the world.

But it is true, can weigh almost 50 tons, is the largest toothed mammal, and has very special characteristics. For example:

The sperm whale can be lowered to depths of 3,000 meters, holding their breath for more than 1 hour and resist the high pressure that occurs at these depths. When your heart beats dives 1 time per minute, and lungs contract to handle the pressure. Pressures we are talking about 30 million Pascals ... it is like having to put up at the tip of the little finger, 5 bulls on top of each other, and that in each cm2 of the skin of the whale. In addition, blood has a dense, with many red blood cells and this reduces nitrogen production, something that all divers are afraid and so are decompression.
All these physical adaptations allow the mammal to become deeper dives.
Another thing that stands out is the sonar. Sunlight begins to disappear at a certain depth (about 400m I think), the abyssal darkness prevails and vision, the eyes, is useless in these places. But the sperm whale has devised how to move easily and even hunt prey as elusive as the giant squid. The crack produced by the sperm whale is the loudest sound produced by any animal, but its function is unknown (although it is believed that sonar and used as a weapon to stun their prey).
The sperm whale can get to be more than 20 meters and, as we said, 50 tons and has a serrated jaw 5 meters. It is a mammal, lives in family groups, and has no predators. Still, is in danger of extinction ... for now in a vulnerable state.

Dumbo Octopus

They are in the depths of the ocean where we find this so strange and funny animalete. This is an octopus (really a kind of octopus) who lives between 3,000 and 5,000 meters deep and is called the Dumbo Octopus (Grimpoteuthis) because their fins resemble the ears of an elephant.

Where this little cephalopod lives of 20 cm long, is less sunlight and that explains why it is white or very light shades.

Living in the abyssal zone, we know very little about the Dumbo Octopus, except to eat down to the depths. And the way you eat, a unique feature of this octopus. Compared with others, Dumbo swallows its prey whole and not going pecking as do other octopuses. Among their prey can find some small crustaceans and marine worms.

You can flush the transparent layer of their skin at will. The Dumbo octopus largest ever recorded was 1.8 meters long and weighed about 6 kg but as we said, the normal size for different species is believed to be smaller.

Crown-of-thorns starfish

One of the most beautiful starfish that we find is known Crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci).

This animal is a predator of coral. Their appearance is reddish-violet color of a red and rarely white. It has between 11 and 20 arms and reaches a diameter of 60 cm. It is provided with spines throughout the body that provide a good defense against predators. Contact with their spines causes a sharp pain that can last about four hours, nausea and vomiting. Often the affected region around the contact point experiences a severe inflammation with erythema, edema which may last several days. You can move at a speed of 20 meters per hour.

This small animalete is a great indicator of ocean health of our oceans. Like Salps about the jellyfish, the number of crowns of thorns is inversely proportional to the health of the seas. To be more simple: The more they are ... worse.

This is because the crown-of-thorns starfish, apart from beautiful, eat lots of coral. And while their predators are disappearing, these increases and are gradually destroying the already damaged reef ecosystems. It also has a very curious way of eating coral polyps: The crown-of-thorns starfish is seated on an area and remove the stomach through the mouth. producing an external digestion. Then hairy filaments collect organic matter and lead into the animal. When you finish eating is only one white spot of dead coral.

Although coral has its own methods of defense against these voracious predators, whenever the starfish is larger. Methods of defense we found crabs that take refuge among the coral with their claws and quills or spines break the starfish .... could say that is an ally. But this is insignificant.

Naturalists and environmental groups involved in reef systems are trying hard to stop the plague kill them as well as about other starfish, when you cut one of the arms can reach another individual regenerate more.

Pelican eel.

From the abyssal depths of the oceans, I present to Eurypharynx Pelecanoides or commonly called pelican eel. Then you will see why his name. I, since I saw impressed me, and if I dived I thought he would die of a heart attack when the darkness of the sea from an animal emerged as the Pelican Fish.

But this fish lived for many feet (even miles) deep and that is why we have seen a few times, and that is why, little is known about him.

Specimens have been found about 60 cm, although it is thought that can reach 1 meter, and although not very large compared with our body, is possibly the animal with jaws relationship / larger body of all (I say this without have checked). His mouth is huge, you can eat larger prey than itself. Therefore, in addition to its "mouth" has an elongated body with a flexible stomach stretches to give shelter to the victim.

But his curiosity did not end there: It has a light body which aims to attract prey.

What a hunter ... thankfully does not feed people and feed on other fish, shrimp or plankton.

By the way, this video is very good (a little dark), I recommend that you see, you will not regret.

BRUTUS. The giant crocodile.

Some people say it is worth a thousand words a picture ... and in this case is true: I present to Brutus, "the giant crocodile."

Apparently it was believed that this animal was merely a doctored image, but has now been recorded and has appeared on several television programs. I show a video.

Researching the internet I discovered that the picture is not quite real, and has been a bit exaggerated ... Comparing the image of the photo and the video image, we see that the photo has been manipulated.

Well, anyway, this does not mean that the crocodile is small. With a single bite can tear your head.

By the way, if you look at the image, you will see that is missing one leg, say the guidelines of the boats, he lost a fight against a shark. We will never know if that was so, or was it a boat propeller. Well ....

According to the description provided, the crocodile weighs a ton and is about 6 meters long. The truth is that he is a true giant crocodile. A large marine crocodile.

Sepia colors.

The common sepia (Sepia officinalis) is a fascinating animal ... Believe it or not. We're used to seeing them in the dish, with some seasoning, white and tasty. But make no mistake, this animal is amazing. Going to see some features.

Sepia size can vary up to 65 cm long and can weigh 4 kg, although animals in warmer seas are generally smaller.
They are very intelligent, and why not ... even resentful. When they are small and are vulnerable to certain predators, retained in his memory the image of a predator. And then when they grow up, they come and hunt prey over others.

But it is the most fascinating colors. Show the color as a sign of his mood. During mating display colors with the intent to intimidate their opponents. And when hunting know how to dress, the colors blend in around him. Can imnotizar prey and these, Abobo, stalk left until the cuttlefish is close enough to launch his attack. They have eight arms with four rows of suckers each and two long tentacles to capture prey, which, however, it retracts into the bags under the eyes if not used.
But not "just" that also can vary the texture of your body if you want to blend to be virtually invisible.

This is a video of the Wizard of colors. Sepia hunting.

Besides that, is a survivor who has gadgets to escape their attackers. Has a bag of brown ink spilled in the water. This lead to dismissal from predators and just in time to flee.

Another aspect is the view you have, have developed eyes that let you see in the dark, a general feature of other cephalopods such as the mysterious colossal squid.

Little is known of the blobfish, an animal with a truly strange and peculiar aspect. It is a fish, and lives in depth. Hence its gelatinous. To offset the high pressures on the ocean depths, this fish has a gelatinous meat, with a density almost equal to that of water.

With that body is easy to stay afloat without effort, and effort does not do much because it is dedicated to walking and eating the food that passes in front of his mouth.

Another feature of these fish is that they have large eyes that let you see in the dark. Come on, all this makes the appearance of this pezecito be something funny. Look at this picture:

Apparently some 250,000 have been recorded blobfish, of which 30,000 have beenstudied.

This fish is almost unknown, is in danger of extinction because of fishing practices that are practiced in areas where it lives. Deep trawlers are looking crabs and lobsters offthe coast southeast of Australia, that capture by "accident" this and other fish andindiscriminately destroying the lives of thousands of species.
