Kiwi

Kiwi (Apteryx, gr. "Wingless") is a timid animal, a nocturnal bird with a peculiar appearance. The size of a hen, and a highly developed sense of smell, the kiwi has two peculiarities that make it unique in the world.

1 - The first peculiarity is its appearance, in fact, at first thought it was a mammal. Why? Because instead of feathers, has bristles (albeit soft). It has large nostrils in its beak, and has hollow bones like most birds. So the Kiwi is the heaviest bird (in proportion), their legs are strong and running and defend views closely resemble cassowaries ... but that is the second peculiarity.

2 - Evolutionarily speaking, the animal closest to the Kiwi, is the Moa. The Moa is
considered the largest bird that ever lived, in fact, was called "elephant bird" and lived until about 100 years until the man finished with the species.
Instead, the Kiwi is not larger than a hen. But the egg is not that of a hen. It is said that the egg of the Kiwi is huge, bigger than himself ... but of course that's impossible ... but only just ... and is in proportion to the animal body with a large egg

throughout the animal world. In fact, during pregnancy, much of the body size is to accommodate a huge egg. But look at the x-ray.

Indeed, the left image shows the Kiwi again laid the egg. It will have been rested.

Crown-of-thorns starfish

One of the most beautiful starfish that we find is known Crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci).

This animal is a predator of coral. Their appearance is reddish-violet color of a red and rarely white. It has between 11 and 20 arms and reaches a diameter of 60 cm. It is provided with spines throughout the body that provide a good defense against predators. Contact with their spines causes a sharp pain that can last about four hours, nausea and vomiting. Often the affected region around the contact point experiences a severe inflammation with erythema, edema which may last several days. You can move at a speed of 20 meters per hour.

This small animalete is a great indicator of ocean health of our oceans. Like Salps about the jellyfish, the number of crowns of thorns is inversely proportional to the health of the seas. To be more simple: The more they are ... worse.

This is because the crown-of-thorns starfish, apart from beautiful, eat lots of coral. And while their predators are disappearing, these increases and are gradually destroying the already damaged reef ecosystems. It also has a very curious way of eating coral polyps: The crown-of-thorns starfish is seated on an area and remove the stomach through the mouth. producing an external digestion. Then hairy filaments collect organic matter and lead into the animal. When you finish eating is only one white spot of dead coral.

Although coral has its own methods of defense against these voracious predators, whenever the starfish is larger. Methods of defense we found crabs that take refuge among the coral with their claws and quills or spines break the starfish .... could say that is an ally. But this is insignificant.

Naturalists and environmental groups involved in reef systems are trying hard to stop the plague kill them as well as about other starfish, when you cut one of the arms can reach another individual regenerate more.

The Takin

This animal unknown to many has many characteristics that make it a very interesting animal. Consider first some information about this animal.

The Takin (Budorcas taxicolor) is in the mountainous regions of civilization hidden in the mountains of the Himalayas and western China at an altitude of 1.950 to 4.500 m.

Its weight rarely exceeding 350 kg and his height is 130 cm cross. They are herbivores and their predators are bears and wolves (other than the man who is to all other species).

Now let's look at two curious features of this animal.

1 - His appearance is strange, short legs and a sturdy body and is also the bovine plumper. Not the heaviest, but in relation to its size, the more robust.

2 - Although this animal may appear to many, by the countries where it is highly valued, in fact it is the national animal of Bhutan.

And finally, 2300 years ago, in Greek mythology appears in the story of Jason and the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece. Well, it is thought that the golden fleece fleece refers to the Takin, a ram yellow, golden brown hair long remembered gold.

Pelican eel.

From the abyssal depths of the oceans, I present to Eurypharynx Pelecanoides or commonly called pelican eel. Then you will see why his name. I, since I saw impressed me, and if I dived I thought he would die of a heart attack when the darkness of the sea from an animal emerged as the Pelican Fish.

But this fish lived for many feet (even miles) deep and that is why we have seen a few times, and that is why, little is known about him.

Specimens have been found about 60 cm, although it is thought that can reach 1 meter, and although not very large compared with our body, is possibly the animal with jaws relationship / larger body of all (I say this without have checked). His mouth is huge, you can eat larger prey than itself. Therefore, in addition to its "mouth" has an elongated body with a flexible stomach stretches to give shelter to the victim.

But his curiosity did not end there: It has a light body which aims to attract prey.

What a hunter ... thankfully does not feed people and feed on other fish, shrimp or plankton.

By the way, this video is very good (a little dark), I recommend that you see, you will not regret.

The regeneration of the salamander

Imagine going to the doctor because it hurts the arm and examine it says: - Sorry, but you have to cut the arm .- to what you will answer, - nothing happens, I will grow my arm.

I will grow my arm? the doctor will probably start thinking that you're not right in the head ... but it is not just you're a fan of the animal and just read that salamanders regenerate their body parts ... and also time and again.

In nature there is quite often the regeneration of the members (the tail of the lizard or the legs of a starfish). When a body part is damaged or must shed to escape a predator just get rid of it and wait for regrowth.

The Queen of regeneration is the salamander. When one of these salamanders lost, for example, a foot, then on the stump as a small lump, called a blastema. The blastema only takes 3 weeks to become fully functional a new leg, a fairly short period if we consider that the animal can live 12 years or more. In a human, that would regenerate a limb by not more than 5 months.

Furthermore, since it takes so little to regenerate their legs, this animalete can regenerate again and again throughout his life. And to not be ugly, unattractive and unappealing to the opposite sex, the salamander not produce scars. Although I had to cut his arm several times over a long period, after 3 weeks you never notice it.

Giant chimpanzees.

They really are not chimpanzees, although they seem a lot but larger. In fact, do not quite know what it is or how to classify these beings were discovered in the Congo in 2004.

Similar to chimpanzees but not as robust as the gorillas. Experts do not agree.

The Scientists are considering several theories about the apes, which are a new species, which are giant chimpanzees but behave like gorillas, or that are hybrid, the product of mating between gorillas and chimpanzees.

If, as suspected, it is a new species, the finding would be one of the most important in decades. But this will not know for sure until the DNA is analyzed.

And apparently, but for us these are "new" apes in the area and were well known to its inhabitants. They described the ferocious animals like monkeys and strong even able to kill lions.

And these chimpanzees weigh 100 kg (twice that chimpanzees we know) and very muscular. And I assure you that the muscles of these giant chimpanzees have twice the force that a bodybuilder with the same weight.

Cuckoo's Egg.

Possibly the most notorious bird with the animal world than the vulture or a raven, possibly the most notorious bird is the common cuckoo or Cuculus canorus.

Classify the behaviors of animals in our culture, and adjectives are attributed to the cuckoo are unflattering: operator, cheater, liar, fraud, etc ... But like I said, are just classifications of our moral system to a survival tactic, which, however, is as valid as any other.

What causes this animosity towards the cuckoo is taking advantage of other poultry farms, deceives and makes slaves. What happens is that when the cuckoo bird detects that a (usually
small, insectivorous bird) is laying eggs, the cuckoo deposits in the nest egg with these. The Cuckoo's Egg will be just the same, very similar in color, size and shape to host bird's eggs (above). Sometimes they are so alike that even the most expert ornithologists know the difference.

Then, as all eggs are equal, the host birds, hatch and care for the state of the egg that is not theirs, but the cuckoo.

But the Cuckoo's plan does not stop there, once the eggs hatch (usually the cuckoo is first) the cuckoo chick to not even get rid of all the other eggs, either pushing them to throw the nest or until just pecking with them. In this way ensures that the food brought by parents, guests birds, is just for him. Deceived, birds fed the only guest who is not her son but the cuckoo, and is also the murderer of the dead children.
In the top right image we can see the cuckoo, much larger than their adoptive parents, still fed by them.

Watch this video You'll be amazed to see how it works the cuckoo.

Emperor Butterfly.

The emperor butterfly, as its name suggests, is a butterfly that is above the others, is the species name of a butterfly is considered one of the largest in the world. Rather .... THE GREATEST.

Emperor Butterfly (Thysania Agrippina), is also known as bird-winged butterfly, white devil, butterfly ghost, witch big gray. And it is certainly larger than many birds.

Is large, with a wingspan of up to 35 cm. And despite his major and his royal name, is an animal that is endangered due to destruction of their
natural habitat.
It is a moth of powerful flight, easily confused with a bat or a bird. A
often close to the houses, attracted by the lights. Some superstitious people ascribe bad omen.

Sorry I can not show more pictures.

BRUTUS. The giant crocodile.

Some people say it is worth a thousand words a picture ... and in this case is true: I present to Brutus, "the giant crocodile."

Apparently it was believed that this animal was merely a doctored image, but has now been recorded and has appeared on several television programs. I show a video.

Researching the internet I discovered that the picture is not quite real, and has been a bit exaggerated ... Comparing the image of the photo and the video image, we see that the photo has been manipulated.

Well, anyway, this does not mean that the crocodile is small. With a single bite can tear your head.

By the way, if you look at the image, you will see that is missing one leg, say the guidelines of the boats, he lost a fight against a shark. We will never know if that was so, or was it a boat propeller. Well ....

According to the description provided, the crocodile weighs a ton and is about 6 meters long. The truth is that he is a true giant crocodile. A large marine crocodile.

Desmodus rotundus or common vampire.

Vampires have given rise to many legends and stories of yesteryear who have forged a popular place in our unconscious.Possibly the best known is the story of Dracula or the Chupacabra, fantastic creatures that attack their victims (humans and animals)sucking all the blood and literally leaving them dry.

The vampire Desmodus rotundus is the best known and most extensive habitat in the world. The most characteristic feature of this vampire is the way you eat, of course, is sucking the blood of their victims.

At night is most active, and is nourished by blood, mostly fromlarge mammals such as horses and cattle. It has been observedfeeding on the blood of chickens and also attacks humans.

The first thing is to bite, a bite surface in order to go licking theblood from the wound. The common vampire bat's saliva has a powerful anticoagulant (which began to be used in medicine) and prevents the wound from closing until the end.

There are two main dangers for the animal victims of this mammal.

1 - If an animal (a cow) is attacked by several individuals of vampires, and for several days. Literally left without blood, causingthe death of the animal.
2 - You can transmit diseases, including rabies.

But the common vampire bat has a nice side ... Their high intakemay share with others of their species to survive. Because onlythose who receive the food could die because they can not be more than 48 hours without eating.

As I said before, the bad reputation of this animal does not correspond with reality. It was possibly attributed due to the damageproduced in animals that fulfilled an important role in rural societiesof yesteryear.

The common swift, the world's fastest bird.

The common swift is a bird of extraordinary. Although we see many times and used to their presence, the Swift is probably better suited to the bird fly around the world.
First, the Swift is considered the fastest bird. Flies at a speed greater than any in its class. While it is true that the Peregrine Falcon can reach speeds higher (200 mph), these speeds are reached in fall, not horizontally.

A Swift may be flying at 150 mph and the alpine swift to 170 mph. A rate is not negligible.
Just see these wonderful birds shows that your body is adapted to speed on the fly. Its anatomy is the most aerodynamic of all birds (like the swallows). It has adapted wellto air your legs have become shorter and useless. Not being almost used weredownsizing and making them almost useless for travel by land. Eat, drink, mates and even sleeps in the air. To sleep in the air at dusk, rise and rise and rise as high as you lose sight, they begin to plan and sleep until dawn.
Another curiosity: When the Swift is subjected to inclement weather or a shortage of food, you can enter a state of near hibernation or "torpor." Thus, they consume less energy. Swifts adults can survive two days in this state and the chicks can survive and even five days.

Another more curious: How many years did not touch the ground only to nest and his paws are not developed, they need to make nests at some point. So drop and start flying as their feet are not allowed to walk, run or jump.

Sepia colors.

The common sepia (Sepia officinalis) is a fascinating animal ... Believe it or not. We're used to seeing them in the dish, with some seasoning, white and tasty. But make no mistake, this animal is amazing. Going to see some features.

Sepia size can vary up to 65 cm long and can weigh 4 kg, although animals in warmer seas are generally smaller.
They are very intelligent, and why not ... even resentful. When they are small and are vulnerable to certain predators, retained in his memory the image of a predator. And then when they grow up, they come and hunt prey over others.

But it is the most fascinating colors. Show the color as a sign of his mood. During mating display colors with the intent to intimidate their opponents. And when hunting know how to dress, the colors blend in around him. Can imnotizar prey and these, Abobo, stalk left until the cuttlefish is close enough to launch his attack. They have eight arms with four rows of suckers each and two long tentacles to capture prey, which, however, it retracts into the bags under the eyes if not used.
But not "just" that also can vary the texture of your body if you want to blend to be virtually invisible.

This is a video of the Wizard of colors. Sepia hunting.

Besides that, is a survivor who has gadgets to escape their attackers. Has a bag of brown ink spilled in the water. This lead to dismissal from predators and just in time to flee.

Another aspect is the view you have, have developed eyes that let you see in the dark, a general feature of other cephalopods such as the mysterious colossal squid.

Tyrannobdella rex.

Today my friends, I'll show you an incredible animal but also detestable. An animal that if we saw it in action, rather not have seen, even we had hoped that did not exist ... if you are ready, read on.

Do you see the black spot that looks for that person's eye? Well, this is nothing more and nothing less than a leech, the leech T. REX. It is huge (for what it is) from 5 to 6 inches long and has a row of sharp teeth that cling to the meat of the mucosa and do not release ... subject once suck suck and suck and are terrible. The bite is painless, because saliva contains an anesthetic. It also has an anticoagulant that ensures the flow of blood as it is suctioned.

Makes relatively little is known, in fact, was discovered in the nostrils of a Peruvian girl who went to the doctor because I felt that something was slipped inside the nostrils. And one thing is for sure, a lot of strength must have to enter through the nostrils of a person.

Anyway, if you want to dabble in the desirable South American rivers, have one thing in mind: an enemy awaits you. Hehehe

The coconut crab or Birgus latro.

You thought that this image was not real? Yes, this picture is real, the image of a huge crab, the heaviest of all the crabs, and after the giant crab of Japan, is the longest.

This is the coconut crab or Birgus latro. And why is called the coconut crab "... well because its huge claws and strength that is in them is able to break coconuts. It also receives other names like "robber crab" or "palm thief" to be considered a thief who steals shiny objects houses the Pacific and Indian Ocean (found especially in Christmas Island or the Seychelles.
But her stunning looks should not intimidate, is practically herbivore rather fructívoro, although sometimes eat decaying organic foods including the bodies of certain animals or animals very slow and juvenile sea turtles.

The coconut crabs live on land, econdido between rocks or in burrows, which is why it is "nose. " Nose is not as good as ours, but unlike their peers (other crabs) that have specialized organs called aestetas on their antennae to determine both the focus and direction of an odor, the coconut crab has different sense organs that allow odors in the air. It has an excellent sense and can detect interesting odors over long distances, for example, the smell of grilled meat, bananas and coconuts call your attention especially as potential sources of food.

Weight varies by age and sex, but estimates can easily reach the 10 kg.
Let's see how they break a coconut.

The gaur, gayal or mithun.

In India, Nepal and Indonesia there is a bovid (Family Bovidae that brings animals like antelopes, oxen, bison, buffalo, goats and sheep) related to domestic cows and has a record size of all the species of the family .

An average adult male can easily reach 2.2 meters (6,6 ft) in height at the withers (which would be the highest point of the body without raising the bass) and over 3 (9,8 ft ) in length. Muscles and more muscles to reach a weight of 1000 kg (2.200 lb).

Like all the bovines, the gaur, gayal or mithun, are strictly herbivores. They eat both grass and tree leaves and bamboo shoots. The coat color ranges from reddish brown to dark brown, with broad forehead and legs below the knee white. The horns, fairly short and black tip, born on the sides of his head and arching upwards.

Predators include wolves, Cuon, tigers, leopards, bears, Tibetan and men, who have pursued primarily for their meat.

It should be like cape buffalo.

Blobfish.

Little is known of the blobfish, an animal with a truly strange and peculiar aspect. It is a fish, and lives in depth. Hence its gelatinous. To offset the high pressures on the ocean depths, this fish has a gelatinous meat, with a density almost equal to that of water.

With that body is easy to stay afloat without effort, and effort does not do much because it is dedicated to walking and eating the food that passes in front of his mouth.

Another feature of these fish is that they have large eyes that let you see in the dark. Come on, all this makes the appearance of this pezecito be something funny. Look at this picture:

Apparently some 250,000 have been recorded blobfish, of which 30,000 have beenstudied.

This fish is almost unknown, is in danger of extinction because of fishing practices that are practiced in areas where it lives. Deep trawlers are looking crabs and lobsters offthe coast southeast of Australia, that capture by "accident" this and other fish andindiscriminately destroying the lives of thousands of species.

Turritopsis nutricula... an immortal animal

Some time ago we talked about the Water Bear or tardigrades, an animal alive can withstand the most extreme conditions, for example, live in space or living a dormant state for thousands of years.

But the animal that we see now is almost as surprising: AN ANIMAL IMMORTAL.

No esque dodging bullets or become invisible to predators. It is easier to explain yet,but much more fascinating because it is real.

Nutricula Turritopsis is a polyp, a jellyfish that is considered immortal because, unlikeall other components of the animal kingdom, this becomes a child when you aregetting old.

I mean, an animal is born, grows, reproduces and dies (is typical) and jellyfish as well.Jellyfish usually have a fixed stage (when polyps) and is fixed to a substrate, then theydevelop and become the jellyfish swimming we've all seen ... then reproduce, grow old and eventually die.

Well, the Turritopsis nutricula is medusa polyp and then, and played and then ...BACK to polyps ... It is believed that this cycle can be repeated infinitely and thus live forever.

I leave an explanatory video.
